Marketing Expert to Share Self-Promotion Strategies
to Increase Business and Attract New Clients
Author Ilise Benun is Featured Speaker at June NJ Creatives’ Meeting
Paramus, NJ –May 11, 2004-- Would you like to increase your
business by learning the fine art of self-promotion? On Tuesday, June 15, come
hear what Ilise Benun, author of "Self-Promotion Online" and "Designing Web
Sites for Every Audience,” has to say. She believes that networking is essential
to the growth of every business. The meeting will be held at the Bergen Museum
of Art and Science, located on the lower level of the Bergen Mall, Paramus, NJ.
Networking begins at 7:15 p.m., the program at 7:45 p.m. The meeting is free for
NJ Creatives members and $8 at the door for guests, $4 for Students.
Benun calls the first segment of her talk, “Networking is Not
Schmoozing,” because she believes the only way to survive this economy is for
creative freelancers and others to expand their network every day. “Networking
is simply a way of engaging, exploring, learning and connecting with the world,”
she explains. Attendees will learn a few new “people skills” and then have a
chance to practice them on other attendees.
Benun will share simple strategies and practical tips for
developing and nurturing relationships with clients and prospects. Some of the
topics she will discuss include:
• How to talk about yourself and your business without bragging
• How to be persistent without being a pest
• How to prevent good leads from falling through the cracks
• How to use your portfolio to get a conversation going that leads directly to a
project
“A key component to effective self promotion,” Benun says, “is
identifying the companies you really want to work with -- instead of taking
whatever projects come along.” In the second half of the presentation, she will
discuss how to approach dream prospects, what to say after reaching them, and
how to stay in touch until they are ready to hire you.
Benun has written many articles about marketing and
self-promotion and has been featured in a variety of national magazines,
including “Inc. Magazine,” “HOW Magazine,” “Nation’s Business,” “Self,”
“Essence,” “Crain’s New York Business,” and “Working Woman.” She has also
conducted marketing workshops for national organizations, including Fox Valley
Ad Club (WI), AIGA (several local chapters), Graphic Artists Guild (several
local chapters), the HOW Design Conference, NYU Entrepreneurship Summit, the
American Marketing Association, the National Association of Women Business
Owners, the Family Business Council, the Usability Professionals Association,
and the 92nd St. Y.
Through her Marketing Mentor Program, she works closely with
managers and creatives to teach them the "marketing mindset," which includes how
to make connections with people, both in person and on the phone, and how to fit
their own self-promotion into their daily lives. Benun started her Hoboken, New
Jersey-based consulting firm, Creative Marketing & Management, in 1988 and has
been self-employed for all but three years of her working life.
Begun in 1984 by three freelance professionals who wanted to
exchange ideas and referrals, NJ Creatives has grown into a successful
non-profit, dues-paying organization that boasts a diverse and ever-increasing
membership of talented professionals. Members include writers, designers of
print and web media, illustrators, photographers, video producers and public
relations specialists.
